The project "yàn" began with two inkstones that I used as a child for my calligraphy class. Since there is no more calligraphy in my current life, I came up with the idea to intuitively and spontaneously cut, carve and facet the inkstones. Gradually, the shapes and textures happen to resemble the characters of calligraphy in some way. Here, deconstructed functionality and interpreted materiality sneakily become carriers of intertwined traditions, memories, and even identities.
